AMISH BAR QUILT (Part 2)

My Amish Bar Quilt is finally complete!!The original post about this quilt was in 2013 at:  https://indianaquilter40.blogspot.com/2013/10/amish-bar-quilt.html

I have finally gotten the hand quilting, binding, and tag done so here are photos of this beautiful reversible quilt.  It has about 5 spools of cream quilting thread and a wool batting (Hobb's Tuscany line).

I purchased the pre-printed top that I used to hand quilt  this quilt from The Stencil Company at this link: https://www.quiltingstencils.com/  .  This company has all kinds of wonderful quilting stencils and pre-printed designs from 18" square to queen size. I have purchased from this company for years and have always been happy with the products and service.

AMISH BAR QUILT (Part 1)

AMISH BAR QUILT  (Part 1):

I am currently hand quilting this top using a per-marked whole cloth quilt top as the pattern for the quilting design. I do this by basting the top, batting (in this case a wool one), and backing together and putting it in the quilt frame upside down - in other words, the top (the Amish Bars) is currently on the bottom and the per-marked "top" will ultimately be the back but is for now on the top so I can see the design.

I am using a cream colored thread which will really show on the bar side. I guess it really will make a reversible quilt. It is queen size. I pieced the top over a long weekend during the summer and started quilting it on 8/3/2013.

UPDATE:

This quilt has been in and out of the quilt frame several times over the past 4+ years, but today 2/24/2018 I put in the last quilting stitch.

Now to bind it and make a tag. It looks good. We have had rain for several days and so I can't hang it out for a photo. Will get one on here as soon as I can.

LONE STAR (Hand quilted)

LONE STAR:

This isn't a whole cloth quilt in the true sense, but it is a cheater panel that I hand quilted during 1991-1992.

Bound by KL in Montana. I love the Amish colors.

It is 36" square. Cotton with poly batting. I made it intending to hang it in my bedroom, but was made such a nice offer for it that I sold it in 1994.

QUEEN'S CROWN #2 (small quilt with beads - hand quilted)

QUEEN'S CROWN

Supplies:

  • 1 pre-printed 18" block from  https://www.quiltingstencils.com/
  • 22" piece of muslin for backing
  • 22" piece of batting (I used left over poly)
  • Glass beads in your choice of color (I used dark blue and gold/yellow)
  • Quilting thread (I used cream colored)
  • Binding fabric

To start, I thread basted this very well in a bright thread that would not blend in.  I did not use a hoop or frame but just rolled it up in my hand.  I started the quilting in the center and worked on it in quarters.

The beads are quilted on - every time the needle came up through the top, a bead was put on the needle and I completed that quilting stitch. Time consuming, but makes for a pretty finished project.

Once complete, I washed by hand and laid between 2 white pillow cases in yard and allowed to dry flat.

CIRCLES OF LIFE (Handquilted)

CIRCLES OF LIFE: This one is silk top, wool batting, and antique muslin for the backing. Finished size is 14" x 18". This design was inspired by a picture of a quilt from Siberia dated at approx 100 AD. I just free hand quilted the circular design and used a stencil for the cross-hatched squares. Done in 2000. (#265)

SILK WHOLE CLOTH WALL HANGING (Hand quilted)

SILK WHOLE CLOTH WALL HANGING:

Finished size is 23" x 35".

The top is silk with poly batting and cotton backing.

I free hand drew the design of stars, feathers, and circles. I love hand quilting.

This is one of those recycled projects.

I hand-quilted this as the front part of a quilted petticoat for colonial re-enacting, and then changed my mind.

So in 2000, I cut the petticoat apart, bound this and it hangs in the hallway. I love the shade of blue, which also changes some depending on how the light hits it.

WHOLECLOTH WALLHANGING (Handquilted)

WHOLE CLOTH WALL HANGING-

My first whole cloth quilt.

 Finished size is 22" square.

Muslin, poly batting, and navy blue quilting thread. I taped the pattern and the top layer of muslin up to a window and traced it off.

I love to hand quilt, so this was a fun experience, and imagine, no seam lines to work around.

 Completed in July 1991.

WELSH BEAUTY WHOLECLOTH QUILT (Handquilted)

I hand quilted this during 2002 - 2005 a half hour a day. It has a silk top, wool batting, and a muslin back. Used 7+ spools of quilting thread. It is 90" x 108".

The design is based on the Prince of Wales insignia, which dates to the early 1300's and is a traditional pattern in Welsh quilting. Silk and a wool batting make for such easy hand quilting. This is a keepsake to pass on. By now, you would think I would be used to all the "oooo's and aaaaa's" this one gets when I show it off, but I always have to re-look at it to see what others see. This quilt is truly the queen of my collection and skill. (#434)

I bought a pre-printed top from The Stencil Company ( https://www.quiltingstencils.com/ ). I do a lot of business with this company and really am satisfied with the products I have gotten from them.
